I know some people that absolutely loved all of it, but it certainly wasn't for me. Sure as you get more successful you can delegate all the extra work and stick to just performing, but you're still traveling, having to deal with drunken mobs of people, and all that. To just show up to the same space every day, hang out with talented musicians and make music every day, whether as a producer, sound engineer, or musician, sounds like an absolute dream compared to the toil that is touring. So to me it makes total sense that a musician with even moderate success would transition to anything that would just let them spend most of their time in the studio. But everything around playing a show sucked, from booking shows, getting the band and gear to the venue, setting up, tearing down, and being away from home. I loved recording sessions, song writing, and jamming with the band, and the easy access to other really great bands and musicians that comes with just being in that space. When I played in bands, playing live shows was my least favorite part of the whole thing. You dont need the fame, you get the rewarding feeling from knowing people are enjoying music you helped make happen. I feel like a musician who worked on production would feel similar. Sometimes I get to say "oh shit, I actually worked on that" and other times I just quietly get satisfaction that they used it. I've worked on websites that other people have used and it makes me happy when it gets mentioned. Maybe no one knows, maybe some people do, but you always know you helped and that feels rewarding by itself. Helping other things succeed behind the scenes feels cool. Not everyone who gets fame really wants it or are even truly seeking it out. It's not that I wouldn't think it was impossible to do again, but a steady gig helping other things succeed is a bit more fun than doing a lot of work only to run the chance it doesn't work out.
But I know for sure if I made an app that became wildly successful, I would rather just take a steady gig doing good work after instead of trying for a second.
